New citizens given hope for ‘better future’

CHIEF Minister Katy Gallagher welcomed the latest group of Canberrans in a moving citizenship ceremony this morning.

Over 90 people received Australian citizenship in a ceremony at the Theo Notaras Multicultural Centre.

“Australia welcomes you and encourages you to take an active part in our great nation,” said Ms Gallagher.

Ms Gallagher also reflected on her own parents’ journey to Canberra “in hope of a new and better future,” and how the city has given her and her brothers and sisters the life their parents had always wanted them to have.

“This is not about turning your back on your past but embracing your future, and to live work and enjoy life in our wonderful city,” Ms Gallagher said.

A wonderful thing to see a welcome to people who want to live in Australia – rather than locking up those who come here with a desperate desire to do so.
