A PEDESTRIAN footpath will be constructed along the Northbourne Avenue median before Christmas to prepare for the March 2014 launch of a Centenary sculpture and time capsule.

The gravel path,  between London Circuit and Vernon Circle, and a permanent and higher quality concrete path through part of City Hill, will give Canberrans access by foot to the 8.5m tall Centenary sculpture and time capsule, which will sit atop City Hill.

Artist Geoff Farquhar-Still has been commissioned by Canberra CBD Limited to bring to life the sculpture that will house the time capsule – and 100 unique objects, each telling their own story.

CEO of Canberra CBD Limited Jane Easthope says the time capsule will give Canberrans living in 2113 the opportunity to discover “unique stories that helped shape the first 100 years as the nation’s capital”.

“The 100 unique objects included in the time capsule will each tell their own story and will range from rare and fascinating items to everyday objects that represent Canberra’s origins,” Ms Easthope says.

Organisations and individuals representing diversity in the Canberra community have been invited to contribute an item to the time capsule, and an exhibition in February will showcase the objects before they are sealed in the time capsule.

The sculpture and time capsule will be unveiled on Tuesday March 11 2014.

The work on Northbourne Avenue is expected to be completed before Christmas and the path on City Hill will be completed by the end of February 2014.
