Dog attacks: council growls at owners

Dogs at McKellar-6111
“Dog ownership can be a joy and dogs are often loveable family members,” says ranger supervisor Simon Upward.
TWENTY dog attacks have been reported in the Queanbeyan area since January 20, sparking council rangers to urge dog owners to ensure their pets are properly contained and remain on leads at all times when outside their enclosure.

Most of the attacks had occurred while dogs had been roaming on the streets.

“Unfortunately, we have seen some distressing dog attacks this year and most of them could have been prevented,” ranger supervisor Simon Upward said.

“Every resident should be able to walk our streets safe from menacing dogs.

“We urge dog owners to take their responsibilities seriously. Dog ownership can be a joy and dogs are often loveable family members. However,  no-one should be in denial about the capacity of their animal to harm a person or another animal.

“Dog owners can face fines of over $1000 for being the owner of a dog involved in an attack.”
