Evacuations as stove left on at Assembly

THE fire brigade was called to the ACT Legislative Assembly this morning and a small number of people were evacuated from the second floor of the building as a precaution, because someone left the stove on.

An automatic fire alarm was triggered at about 11.45 this morning by smoke from a stovetop that was left switched on and unattended.

Two fire pumpers, the Hazardous Materials Unit, the Breathing Apparatus Van and a Command Officer attended.

There was no sign of flames and the fire crew commenced ventilating the building. The people evacuated from level two would be allowed to return following testing of the air quality, according to a statement.

In this case emergency services did not issue the fire brigade’s usual warning: “Don’t stop looking while you’re cooking”.
