Fashfest finale ends on fabulous note

Words: Megan Sparke Photography: Andrew Campbell

THE fourth and final night of Fashfest was abuzz with anticipation and excitement as over 400 Canberrans filled the industrial setting to be part of the big finale.

The pre-show drinks and canapés were the perfect opportunity to people watch and appreciate the local fashion on display. As the lights were lowered and people took their seats the music, a DJ set accompanied by a violinist set the perfect pace for a vibrant evening.

First on the runway was the face of Fashfest, Anneliese Seubert, in a futuristic black and white dress by designer Corr Blimey. The collection featured structured, edgy pieces that were juxtaposed against softer materials and lightened by the models’ cheeky make-up and hair.

This was followed by Aperiodic whose pieces appeared soft and flowing, almost Grecian in style but with intricate details such as cinching at the back or red plastic webs on the shoulder drawing your mind to the well thought out design of the pieces.

Ule followed with layered soft pieces in earthy and natural tones that clearly portrayed the brands focus on environmental sustainability.

Mec and the Maid’s collaboration with E4 used soft materials as a base and incorporated contrasting textures of leather, lace cut outs and gold trimmings.

When Scarlette appeared on the runway my first thought was that I wanted to wear their clothes. The collection is made up of pants, shift dresses, skirts and cropped tops in panels of brown, white and blue. It came across as wearable and comfortable but with the right amount of sophistication.

This was followed by the fun and quirky collection by Shekudo, which featured a combination of bright paisley suits, pastel layered tops and ruffled pants to more revealing cut out pieces.

Baku swimwear and Mont adventure gear appeared again for the fourth night bringing a cheeky and fun flavour to the evening.

The final collection was Materialbyproduct whose show moved away from the traditional to include one model dancing along the runway while other models adorning Materialbyproduct pieces were plucked from the audience to join the runway. The clothes were rich in texture and layered to give the impression of warmth and comfort.

The show ended with a gathering of designers from the previous four nights, as well as models and behind the scene crew together on the runway. It was a visual display of just how much effort, collaboration and creativity had gone into Fashfest which ended on a very impressive note.
