CANBERRANS are being urged to leave their cars behind on the March 11 centenary birthday, with ACTION offering free bus travel all day. 

Minister for Territory and Municipal Services Shane Rattenbury says ACTION will operate all buses free of charge and provide additional services to help Canberrans travel on the day.

“This is a very public-spirited way for us to encourage everyone to come to the party,” Mr Rattenbury says.

“We want to make sure all Canberrans can join in the fun. If you usually drive to public events, try leaving the car behind – enjoy a free ACTION ride to the lake, and forget having to park.”

Buses will operate to an enhanced Sunday timetable, with added night time shuttles to Belconnen, Woden, Tuggeranong and City bus stations. The temporary bus stop on Commonwealth Avenue will be in service on the day, dropping people to the heart of celebrations.

The Centenary Loop service – Route 100 – will continue to depart at 30 minute intervals on the day. Route 100 departs from City Bus Station, Northbourne Avenue from 9 am to 4.30 pm servicing the City fringe and Parliamentary Triangle.

Route 100 includes stops at the Australian War Memorial, National Gallery of Australia, Old Parliament House, Parliament House, Albert Hall, National Library of Australia, National Museum of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive.

An additional bus route will operate on the day departing from City Bus Station every 20 minutes servicing four locations around the event site, on both sides of the lake. Two buses will run simultaneously.
