JOINING Canberra’s most fashionable address isn’t a bad way to start the year, says Canberra artist Luke Chiswell.

The 25 year old’s hand screen printed t-shirts and exclusive archive prints will be available for three weeks in a new pop-up store at Braddon’s Lonsdale Street Traders.

Chiswell says he is “really excited and proud” to join “the Traders”, after returning from a six-month stint in London.

“There are some inspiring designers in there, and in Canberra generally,” he says.

“Lonsdale Street Traders is fantastic for bringing a bunch of talent together in the same place.”

Established in 2008, Chiswell’s limited edition hand screen printed t-shirts can be seen adorning loyal devotees in Australia and New Zealand as well as the US and UK.

Chiswell, who was born in Canberra and studied design at the Canberra Institute of Technology, describes the designs as “bold lines and repetitive forms with an exclusively black and white palette.”

“The subtle yet distinctive designs are created to integrate with the surroundings rather than dominate them,” he says.

In addition to launching the pop-up store, Chiswell’s work is currently featured in Young.Hot.Canberra at the Gallery of Australian Design, a showcase of Canberra’s most exciting designers under 35.

His solo exhibition “Face Facing” is opening on February 28 at the Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Manuka.

The pop-up store will be open Wednesdays through Sundays at Lonsdale Street Traders from 10am – 5pm until January 23.
