Graf: three more years with Capitals

CARRIE Graf has confirmed she will continue to coach the Canberra Capitals for at least the next three seasons.

“It’s an absolute honour for me to continue on in Canberra,” she said at a press conference this morning.

“I can assure you, now that I’m re-signed, that we’ll be doing everything we can to take the Capitals program to another level to get us back to the championships next year.”

Signing for three more years, she said, was a step in the right direction for the team, “…as has been the sponsorship of Lauren Jackson, one of the world’s greats, to stay in Canberra.”

Last week, Graf was forced to choose between her coaching roles with the Capitals and the Australian Opals, after Basketball Australia decided to make the Opals position full-time.

“…I think you weigh up a lot of things in your personal and professional life and for me right now, Canberra’s the best place to be, both professionally and personally,” she said.

Graf also recently accepted a position at the University of Canberra as an adjunct professor of sports studies and the university’s first ever coach-in-residence. Along with teaching duties, she will work with University of Canberra Union chief executive Joe Roff and provide support and mentoring to a range of UC sports teams.

The highly sought-after coach has been with the Capitals on-and-off since 1999 and taken them to six WNBL Championship wins, including back-to-back wins in 2005-06 and 2006-07.
