HAPPY “Sweet Eighteenth” Birthday to the Canberra Short Film Festival as it embarks on its 3-day international event, boasting a line up of the best short films from Canberra, Australia and around the world.“It’s been a stellar year for films,” says festival director Simon Weaving, “we had more than 300 entries – a new record.”
The festival runs at Dendy Canberra from Friday September 13 to Sunday September 15, and includes 6 screening sessions, live entertainment and lots of birthday cake.
This year the event has attracted more than 100 films from overseas.
“The seven International finalists include films from Spain, Sweden, Italy and USA” says Festival Coordinator Laura White, “and they make for exquisite cinema. Most of these films have won awards and played at other international festivals.”
As well, it seems, the Australian Category was also highly competitive. So strong were the films in this category that Weaving decided to create two screening sessions – one for drama and the other for comedy.
Weaving says, “Many showcase the talents of the next generation of Australian directors – like Damien Walshe-Howling have significant production budgets and feature acting talent like Chris Hayward, Damon Gameau, Ewen Leslie and Kelly Paterniti.”The festival kicks off at 6pm on Friday, September 13 with champagne and birthday cake, followed by the screening of the Canberra finalists. The Best Australian Comedy screens at 2pm on Saturday, September 14, and the Best Australian Drama at 7pm on the same day. The closing night event the “best of the best” + a couple of surprise films, will be followed by followed by a ‘short’ awards ceremony and a ‘long’ party.
