Heavy rain prompts emergency calls

EMERGENCY services received a total of 11 calls for help after heavy rain yesterday.

That number had increased to 25 by 1pm today and the forecast is for light rain to continue tomorrow, before a drier Thursday and Friday.

raijnVolunteers say minor damage was reported, mostly from leaking roofs but crews have also assisted with minor flooding inside garages and homes today.

The majority of calls were made from Canberra’s southern suburbs, particularly Tuggeranong which had the biggest downpour yesterday, recording 69mm of rainfall.

The wet weather has also forced a number of road closures, including the Oaks Estate Bridge on Oaks Estate Road, and Canberra Avenue was reduced to one lane at the intersection of Canberra Avenue and Sturt Avenue Narrabundah this morning.

Point Hut Crossing, Sunshine Crossing and Angle Crossing were all closed today as well, and further closures may be necessary as the downpour goes on. Signs and barriers are put in place at all closed roads.

It was Canberra’s wettest 24 hour period since March 2012.

For up-to-date information on road closures call Canberra Connect on 13 22 81. Residents who require storm or flood assistance can call the ACTSES on 132 500.
