Jonah and the ocean in art

THROUGH paintings, engraved glass overlays and some projection, artist Micky Allan’s new exhibition,“Sea,” engages with the ocean on many levels and in many moods, embracing its “complexity and flux.”

Her exhibition is the culmination of four years work for a Ph.D.  in Painting at the ANU.

The story of Jonah and the whale is, of course, an archetypal narrative of death and renewal, and in this case becomes a leitmotif in looking at the sea “as a space of transformation and hope.”

“Sea,” at the ANU School of Art Gallery, June 14-22.
