Lectures on petitions mark NAIDOC Week

 THIS year’s theme for NAIDOC Week is  “We value the vision: Yirrkala Bark Petitions 1963,”and  celebrates the 50th anniversary of the presentation of the Yirrkala Bark Petitions to Federal Parliament.

As part of the celebrations, Parliament House is hosting two talks on the petitions to be given by special guest speakers.

Next  Tuesday, Monica Morgan, the national manager of Indigenous Peoples Rights with Amnesty International Australia, will discuss the historical importance and contemporary relevance of the Yirrkala Bark Petitions.

Then on Thursday  July 11, Senior Advisor, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art at the National Gallery of Australia, Franchesca Cubillo will give a talk on the Yirrkala Bark Petitions in the broader context of arts practice in Arnhem Land. This lecturer will be followed by a discussion on te Parliament House’s collection of contemporary Aboriginal photography, to  will be led by Brenda L. Croft, Senior Research Fellow for the National Institute for Experimental Art at the University of NSW.

NAIDOC week  lectures, in the Parliament House Theatre, 12.45pm, July 9 and 11. All welcome.
