THE Canberra Liberals are calling on the ACT government to “put the building blocks in place” for a new convention centre in the city.Shadow Minister for Economic Development Brendan Smyth will move a motion in the Legislative Assembly today for the government to establish a Trust to oversee the development and implementation of the “investment ready” plan by 30 June 2014.
“I will also move that the Government table work conducted on the ‘investment ready’ plan by the last sitting day of this year, and to complete the plan by 30 June 2015,” Mr Smyth says.
“It’s been more than 12 years since ACT Labor promised a new site for a convention centre, yet even with the ACT Labor/Green agreement to ‘progress the Australia Forum to investment ready’, it has failed miserably.
“A new convention centre is a project that makes sense and will be good for Canberra. Demand for conference and convention space has been strong and it will position us for future growth.”
