Lucky escape from severely drunk driver

A WOMAN who drove into a signpost in Higgins yesterday afternoon had a blood-alcohol level nearly six times the legal limit.Police-car-0574-175x175

Police say the driver of a second vehicle narrowly escaped serious injury after hitting the sign, which the collision pushed into the path of oncoming traffic.

A 49-year-old Charnwood woman was driving a green Toyota Camry into the intersection of Kingsford Smith Drive and Drake Brockman Drive at about 3.30pm yesterday, when she crashed into the sign.

The driver of the Camry tested positive for alcohol and was taken to the Belconnen Police Station for breath analysis, which returned a blood-alcohol reading of 0.296 – nearly six times over the legal limit of 0.05.

Officer-in-Charge of Traffic, Sergeant Rod Anderson said someone with this level of alcohol in their system could cause serious trauma on our roads for themselves and other road users.

Her driver’s licence was immediately suspended and she was taken to the ACT Watch House and charged with drink driving. She was bailed to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on March 28.
