Mackerras revealed in NFSA project

THE National Film and Sound Archive’s 2013 Scholar in Residence, Dr Ian Cook, will be presenting some of his findings tomorrow under the heading, “Charles Mackerras and his infinite gift to Mozart Scholars: A critical analysis of Australian recordings in the NFSA spanning the 20th century”.

Dr Cook’s project examines the significance of the historically informed performance practice movement of the late 20th century in how it influenced performances of Mozart in Australia with a special focus on one of our most distinguished conductor/musicians, the late Sir Charles Mackerras.

In looking at the data base of NFSA, he has found significant material that covers a broad timeframe of Mozart performances between 1906 to the present.

In addition, there are many examples of the late Mackerras’ orchestral performances in the NFSA.

Dr Cook has conducted a number of operas by Mozart including “The Magic Flute”, “The Marriage of Figaro”, “Don Giovanni” and “Cosi fan tutte”. Historically informed performance was the strong focus for the preparation of these operas.

Scholar-in-Residence Ian Cook, large Meeting Room at the National Film and sound archive, McCoy Cct Acton, Tuesday July 30, 1-2pm. Come to the Reception Desk by 12.50pm.
