Man assaults police, ambulance officers

POLICE had to fire a taser to subdue a young man who allegedly assaulted police and ambulance officers at a Palmerston home on Saturday night.

About 11.20pm police responded to a request for urgent assistance from Ambulance officer in Tinderry Street where ambulance officers had been medically assisting the 21-year-old man.

While Ambulance officers were treating the man, he became aggressive and made a number of threats.

When police arrived the man aggressively confronted officers before an attempt was made to arrest him. During the arrest, the man violently resisted and assaulted the police officer and a sergeant was forced to fire his taser at the man.  The man was subdued and taken into custody.

The man has been charged with two counts of common assault. He was granted watch house bail and will face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.
