Man crashes car after police pursuit

POLICE are searching for a man who led them on a late night pursuit in Belconnen last night and smashed a suspected stolen car into a tree.

Around 11.45pm police spotted a man in a blue Holden VT Commodore on Lathlain Street acting suspiciously in the car park at the Shell service station.

Police watched the vehicle accelerate away from the service station with its lights turned off and run through a red traffic light at the intersection of Lathlain and Nettlefold Street.

Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop; but the car continued to accelerate away along Lathlain Street.

They pursued the car through Macquarie, reaching speeds of up to 110km/h, before terminating the pursuit in Osbourne Place, Belconnen.

A short time later, the officers were driving along Hennessy Street in search of the car when they saw it drive through the greenbelt area near Crick Place and Hennessy Street and collide with a tree. A man ran from the car towards Moulden Court.

The man is described as 6’1” (187cm) in height with a slim build. He was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

The car was seized and towed to the Exhibit Management Centre and will undergo a forensic review.

Anyone who may be able to provide information to assist the investigation should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information may be provided anonymously.
