Most Canberrans support plastic bag ban

SEVENTY per cent of Canberrans want the ban of lightweight plastic bags to continue, a new ACT government survey shows. bag

Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development Simon Corbell says an interim review showed that 66 per cent of people would also like the ban to be implemented nationally.

“The interim review shows that 84 per cent of Canberrans now carry a re-usable bag with them when doing their shopping instead of relying on bags at the counter,” Mr Corbell says.

The review was done by a telephone survey of primary shoppers in 600 ACT households, and evaluated community acceptance, reduction in plastic bag use, environmental outcomes and retailer compliance.

Mr Corbell says a more broad ranging review would take place after two years of the operation of the lightweight plastic bag ban.

“This interim review gives us an important snapshot of the views in the ACT community about the ban, but after another 12 months we will be able to look more closely at trends of plastic bag use, and reductions of bags to landfill,” he said.

“I am pleased to see that during the first 12 months there were no infringements issued to retailers breaching the ban, and I encourage this good compliance behaviour to continue,” he says.

Would support it if we did not have to pay the 15cents per bag at the shops. Not everyone remembers their bags when they go shopping. What happens to the cloth bags we buy for $1 when they are ripped and not useable?

I do not support the ban on plastic bags. You throw the cloth bags away when they are ripped and buy a new one. The only ones who profited from the sale of bags are the retailers. We now buy plastic bags instead of getting them free with our purchases. Thank you Greens for nothing. Like everything else the Greens do, it cost us money and only benefits a minority. Why aren’t the pot holes in the roads fixed, we pay enough fuel taxes which should largely be reinvested in our roads. We pay more and more and are getting less and less in return. That is not what I call a responsible government but a Labor Government who panders to the Greens. The sooner we get rid of them the better.

A survey of 600 people does not equate to a survey of all Canberra. The title of this article is misleading and should be changed to be “Most people in a survey of 600 people support plastic bag ban” NOT “Most Canberrans..”.
