Police officer struck with log

A POLICE officer has been hospitalised after a man who broke into a woman’s home struck him with a log while resisting arrest early this morning.

After receiving reports of multiple burglaries in the inner south last night and early this morning, police were called to an apartment in Kingston at about 4.47am, where a woman had woken up to a male standing beside her bed and chased him out of the apartment.

She later discovered a number of items missing and contacted police to report a burglary.

A man matching the description of the offender was later seen by officers in Telopea Park. An officer chased the man through the park and arrested him.

During the struggle the offender struck the officer in the face with a log. The officer suffered minor injuries during the assault and was taken to The Canberra Hospital.

The man was arrested and taken to the Watch House and charged with assault, burglary and theft offences.

He will face the ACT Magistrates Court today where bail will be opposed.
