Pricey PM portrait shows yearning

CANBERRA artist Paul Easther has contacted “CityNews” to point out that among all the interstate entries for the notorious Bald Archy Prize, opening tonight at the Watson Arts Centre, is his own entry, a painting of Prime Minister Julia Gillard enjoying a fag outside the Lodge, titled “Becoming Famous is the Worst Thing That Can Happen to You…”

To give us a hint that this goes beyond the bounds of “straight” portraiture and into the satirical nether world of the Archys, He has added a descriptive paragraph —“Under the illusion that she can change the world to fit her own idealism, she still yearned for a… twee ‘dalliance’, a ‘liaison secrete’, as a relief from her stress, worry and hang-ups. No deep personal involvement required!”

“CityNews” couldn’t help noticing on walking through the show early this week that Easther has placed the price of $10,000 on his art work. Does he suspect there are people out there with whom this description will resonate?

The Bald Archy exhibition, at Watson Arts Centre, 1 Aspinall Street Watson, daily from 10am – 4pm, February 8 to March 11. A Charity Preview for Autism Asperger ACT will be held from 6.30pm Thurs 7 March. Bookings 6176 0514.
