Review: ‘Despicable Me 2’ (PG) **

HAVE I missed something? Where’s despicable in this lightweight animation?

Not Gru (voiced by Steve Carell). Now he runs a jam and jelly factory and cars for three little girls. Anti-Villain League chief Ramsbottom (Steve Coogan) recruits him to help pursue and deal with the wicked maker of a purple monster serum that’s threatening the world.

Agent Lucy (Kristen Wiig) joins forces with Gru to operate the Bake My Day cake shop in the mall. They get support of a kind from a herd of Minions. The owner of a Salsa restaurant and the proprietor of a wig shop are among the suspects.

And somebody out there is deploying a huge flying magnet that sucks up all in its path, beginning with an Arctic research station that, once consumed, takes no further part in the film.

It’s zany, vigorous, funny and unburdened with realism or social significance. Kids will love it. Does that include you?

At Hoyts, Dendy, Capitol 6 and Limelight
