Salut! To sway hearts and spirits

SALUT! Baroque is back at the Albert hall on Friday with “Musica Poetica.” That, they tell us, quoting Joachim Burmeister , is the “discipline of music which teaches how to compose a musical composition … in order to sway the hearts and spirits of individuals into various dispositions.”

Seventeenth century composers, they explain, struggled with the question of what makes a great musical composition – and commentator of the time were quick to realise parallels between musicians and the arts of the orator or poet. “Passion” emerged as the key ingredient as Baroque music sought to “sway the hearts and spirits”.

With this in mind, Salut! will be playing  music by Bach, Rosenmüller, Handel, Pachelbel & Schickhardt

The musicians are Josie Ryan, soprano, Sally Melhuish and Hans-Dieter Michatz on recorder, Jane Downer on baroque oboe, Anna McMichael on baroque violin, Julia Russoniello on baroque violin, Valmai Coggins on baroque viola, Tim Blomfield on baroque cello and Monika Kornel on harpsichord.

“Musica Poetica,” music by Bach, Rosenmüller, Handel, and Pachelbel & Schickhardt at Albert Hall on 7.30pm, February 15. Tickets (Adult: $40 / Concession: $35) at the door or by subscription to www.baroque.com.au
