Second outbreak of Mother’s Day food poisoning

A SECOND restaurant is closed following a milder outbreak of food poising from a Mother’s Day lunch on Sunday.

ACT chief health officer, Dr Paul Kelly, this afternoon said: “People presenting in relation to this outbreak are experiencing milder symptoms and this is unrelated to the salmonella outbreak investigation.”

Yesterday, Dr Kelly reported that five people have been hospitalised and 22 treated for food poisoning, after eating at the same Canberra restaurant at various times over the weekend. The Dickson restaurant closed voluntarily on Sunday.

In the latest outbreak, Dr Kelly says the unnamed restaurant is closed and ACT Health is working closely with its management to establish the cause of the outbreak. The restaurant has provided names of bookings and ACT Health are contacting patrons of the restaurant.

“This outbreak is routine in nature and to date no one interviewed have sought medical attention at general practice or hospital as a result of this outbreak. People affected appear to be recovering quickly,” Dr Kelly says.

“Symptoms have been including diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Many cases do not need medical treatment and resolve themselves. People experiencing symptoms of gastroenteritis should ensure they remain well hydrated by drinking fluids.

“People experiencing symptoms of gastroenteritis should avoid preparing food (including working in food preparation or service) while they are unwell.”
