Skate in the City turns Japanese for last day

AS Skate in the City draws to a close this weekend, organisers are inviting costume lovers to hit the rink dressed as their favourite character to win a free skating session.

The “Cultural Sunday” for the 2013 Skate in the City this weekend will celebrate a modern hobby called cosplay, which originated in Japan and involves dressing up as fictional characters, usually from computer games, cartoons and comic books.

To be involved in the “Cosplay on Ice” parade at 11:45am, participants must assemble in full costume outside Impact Comics at 11am.

The first 25 kitted-out cosplayers to arrive will be offered a free ticket to the 12pm skating session.

The Japanese Embassy has provided prizes for a People’s Choice Award for the best costume.

There will also be three free “Kimonos on Ice” skate shows at 11.30am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm.

Skaters and spectators can try out Japanese Calligraphy, Origami and Kendama (a cup-and-ball game) as well as miso soup with pork and vegetables.
