THE Song Company is coming to town this weekend and their concert, The Prophet, should be sensational.
Directed and conducted by Roland Peelman, the six professional singers been on an elaborate tour which winds up at St Christopher’s Cathedral in Manuka on Saturday.
The Prophet tour is a collaboration with ARIA award-winning oud player Joseph Tawadros, who has fans queuing for tickets wherever he goes and who will premiere a new work inspired by the cult book “The Prophet” by Lebanese poet, philosopher and artist Khalil Gibran.
Tawadros has risen to prominence in Australia by developing the traditions of Arabic music in an Australian musical environment. His solo disc for oud, “The Prophet,” is one example of this.
Other composers on the program are Hildegard von Bingen and Fyodor Krestyanin. Performing in this concert are Clive Birch (bass), Mark Donnelly (baritone), Richard Black (tenor), Anna Fraser (soprano) and Susannah Lawergren (soprano).
Peelman has been directing the Song Company for 21 years, building an international reputation for vocal innovation. He has spent an extensive period of time in Canberra and is a well-known figure in the music community here. This year’s theme of “Air” is part of a four-year cycle exploring the elements of Earth, Water, Air and Fire.
The Song Company presents “The Prophet,” in collaboration with Joseph Tawadros, at St Christopher’s Cathedral, Saturday, 6pm, Saturday, April 13, bookings to http://www.songcompany.com.au/ or tickets at the door.
