The race that stops the arts

YOU DON’T normally associate the arts with horse races, but there is a rather special event on tomorrow, so it’s not surprising to hear that some of our arts institutions are taking a break along with the rest of the nation.

Over at the ANU School of Music an unusual workshop is in progress today and tomorrow called “Global Corelli: Fame and Music in the Early Modern World.”

As well as lecture/recitals, open rehearsals and a public concert in Llewellyn Hall at 7pm tomorrow, we have now been told that there will be a Corelli Melbourne Cup lunch.

We don’t know whether the celebrated 17th to 18th century composer Arcangelo Corelli was fond of a bet, but it sounds reasonable to us. Meantime, Belconnen Arts Centre will be hosting a “fun and stylish” Melbourne Cup event, to be MC’d by Greg Bayliss of 666 ABC Canberra

The centre advises guests  to don a hat or fascinator and enjoy an afternoon at the indoor and outdoor bars, where traditional bubbly will be served.

As happened last year, a catwalk will be the stage for the latest designs by over 20 Canberra Institute of Technology Fashion and Design students and the “race that stops a nation” will be projected live on screens across the Centre.

Melbourne Cup celebration and fashion day, Belconnen Arts Centre, 118 Emu Bank, Belconnen. Free event, all welcome, but RSVP desirable to info@belconnenartscentre.com.au  Opening Hours: 10am – 4pm.

Corelli Melbourne Cup lunch,  registration from  10.30am  tomorrow or online at http://music.anu.edu.au/
