Trumpets to sound for ‘Messiah’

ORIGINALLY written by Handel to be performed before Easter, “Messiah” has long since become synonymous with Christmas.

The trumpets will sound again on December 14 as the Canberra Choral Society marks the end of Canberra’s Centenary with a performance of the great work.

The Canberra Choral Society has performed Messiah many times, and it was a natural choice for their first “Come and Sing”  in 2011.

The success of the Come and Sing program has continued, with Haydn’s Creation in 2012, and Carmina Burana (with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra) in October this year. And now, a return to Handel’s “Messiah”, with new (and old) guest choristers, soloists Penelope Mills, Tobias Cole, Robert Macfarlane, Andrew Collis, and guest conductor Graham Abbott.

Abbott — described as the leading Australian authority on Messiah — has conducted the work over 70 times.  The concert will also feature Canberra Choral Society artistic director Tobias Cole singing the alto solos.

Handel’s “Messiah”, at Llewellyn Hall, 7.30pm Saturday,  December 14, bookings to premier.ticketek.com.au/shows/show.aspx?sh=HANDELME13
