UC aims for world ranking within five years

THE University of Canberra will have an international ranking, share profits with its staff and increase enrolments by nearly 50 per cent to 20,000 within the next five years, according to a new plan released today.

The plan,  “Breakthrough: the University of Canberra’s Strategic plan 2013-18″, is based around a vision of the University when the campus turns 50 in 2018, and outlines strategies for improvement and growth, says Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Parker.

“Under this plan, we will become one of Australia’s most innovative and successful young universities – a university of which everyone who has been associated with us since our foundation can be proud,” Professor Parker says.

“At the University of Canberra we have worked hard to be in the strongest position in our history. We are posting an underlying operating surplus. We have more students than ever before. Our research performance is on the rise. Now is the time to work on a bold vision for the future.”

Professor Parker admitted there are challenging times ahead for universities.

“The whole sector is more vulnerable to market forces than ever before and has probably already had the highest level of funding we are likely to see…this is why a clear plan is important,” he says.

“The University of Canberra needs to grow if it is to be sustainable in the long term and we need to look beyond our region and beyond traditional modes of teaching if we are to find new students.

“Under this plan we will grow by 50 per cent and break through into the world rankings of young universities by the time the campus celebrates its 50th birthday in five years.”

The plan contains objectives based on flexible, high-quality learning, a pervasive international focus and high impact research.

It also states the University’s purpose, which is to provide high quality transformative education to everyone suitably qualified, whatever their stage of life and irrespective of their origins; to conduct high quality research which makes an early and important difference to the world and to contribute to the building of just, prosperous and sustainable communities.
