Utterly new and daring: Salut!

Salut Baroque

IT would be a mistake to consider the musicians of Salut! Baroque to be conservative just because they play period instruments.

On the contrary, in the modern music context they can be considered quite revolutionary of the other having fun with another daring musical tradition, the baroque band.

“Utterly new and daring in their day,” Salut! tells us,  “the luxuriant sounds of the violin band (as fashioned by Louis XIV and his devotee, Charles II), brought zest to the otherwise earnest music making of the royal courts.”

To prove it, they  quote the famous diarist, John Evelyn, who, in 1662, reported, “[one] of his Majesties Chaplains preach’d: afterwhich, instead of the antient Grave & Solemn wind musique accompanying the Organ was introduced a Consort of 24 Violins betweene every pause, after the French fantastical light way, better suiting a Tavern or Play-House than a Church…”

Musicians Sally Melhuish, recorder, Hans-Dieter Michatz, recorder, Rachael Beesley, baroque violin, Alice Evans, baroque violin, Skye McIntosh, baroque violin, Julia Russoniello, baroque violin,Valmai Coggins, baroque viola,Tim Blomfield, baroque cello, Aurora Henrich, baroque bass, and Monika Kornel, harpsichord, plan to liven up Albert Hall with music by Vivaldi, Corelli, Bach, Telemann, Geminiani and Avison.

It might not resemble a tavern or a church, but it’s likely to be a lot of fun.

Salut! Baroque presents  “The Baroque Band,” Albert Hall, 7.30pm, Friday, May 24. Tickets at the door or by subscription www.baroque.com.au
