Winter mural marks school’s 50th anniversary

MICHAEL Winters, a former Canberra artist now based in Dubbo, has created a 17-metre mural to mark the 50th anniversary of the Rosary Primary School at Watson.

The mural depicts scenes from the life of the school over the past half century and will be erected on a wall at the front of the school in Fleming Street, Watson on Monday, in time for the celebration of St Dominic’s Day.

The school provided the artist with more than 100 past and present photographs to use as reference material with a specific request for the Dominican nuns, who established the school, and its patron Saint Dominic to be incorporated into the design.

Working from a scale drawing, Winters created the mural, which uses the idea of pages of the school’s history blowing in the wind to evoke the passing of time, in his Dubbo studio on large transportable panels.

The mural will be unveiled at midday on Monday, August 5, will be attended by past and present principals, staff, students and family members.
