“4 Saxby Lane: Romance for Cello and Orchestra” will be performed by Pereira, together with the National Capital Orchestra, conducted by Max McBride, in Gunning  on Saturday and Queanbeyan on Sunday.

As well as the new composition, the orchestra, in its fourth concert for 2013, will perform Offenbach’s  “Overture to La Belle Helene”, Chabrier’s “Suite  Pastorale,” Massenet’s  “Music from the ballet Le Cid”  and Holst’s “The Perfect Fool.”

Pereira explained that he moved to 4 Saxby Lane  in Gunning  in about 2000. “It was my haven at a time in life when I more than normally needed one. It also was a place for the weekend boisterous play of my 3 children, and for new love,” he said.

“This new piece for cello and orchestra plays tribute to a treasured chapter of my personal narrative. The music (it seems to me) sometimes is nostalgic – even a little sad – but this is balanced with a sense of humour, and with liveliness in the second movement. There is some ardour too, but at the end of its 13 minutes my ‘Romance for Cello and Orchestra’ (2013) leaves me as whimsical about life’s transitoriness as I am confident of its splendour.”

The National Capital Orchestra and David Pereira, at Shire Hall, Copeland Street, Gunning, 3pm Saturday, November 9, tickets at the door, and also at Queanbeyan Bicentennial Hall,  3pm Sunday, November 10 . Bookings to  6285 6290 or  theq.net.au and  tickets at the door.  Adults $30 concession $20, full-time students and children 16 years and under $15.
