Wreath-laying marks opening of Parliament

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott officially marked the start of the Parliamentary year with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Australian War Memorial this morning.

Both leaders were joined by Director of the War Memorial Dr Brendan Nelson and Chairman Rear Admiral Ken Doolan, and laid wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Hall of Memory.

Dr Nelson said the ceremony, held for the first time, was not only to mark the opening of Parliament, but was a symbol of the nation’s respect for those Australian service men and women who had given their lives in war and peace.

“The symbolism of both our political leaders laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the start of the parliamentary year is potent,” he said.

“In it we are reminded that governments and parliaments make decisions that have a price – ultimately the lives of Australian service men and women.”

The ceremony also included a bugle call of the “Last Post” and an ode by Canberra Girls Grammar student and Simpson Prize recipient Phyllida  Behm.

Some members of the public gathered near the entrance of the memorial to watch on, with a few wishing both leaders “good luck” ahead of the election as they left.
