250 volunteers needed for Civic’s Christmas light extravaganza

SIDS and Kids ACT is calling for volunteers for their Christmas lights world record attempt in Canberra’s CBD.

Around 250 volunteers are required to greet visitors, assist with crowd flow management, as well as collect gold coin donations.

SIDS and Kids ACT CEO Nathalie Maconachie is encouraging all Canberrans to get behind the project, which is set to be one of the biggest events of the year.

“Without volunteers this event just wouldn’t be going ahead. We’ve already seen so many local businesses and individuals donating their time and services to the construction phase, now it’s about securing some enthusiastic people to help us out during the event,” says Nathalie.

The light display will transform Canberra’s CBD into a magical festival of lights in an attempt to smash the Guinness World Record for the largest LED light image display in the world.

“We had so many volunteers help last year when the event was held at David Richards’ home in Forrest. We need even more this year. We have nearly 600 shifts to fill!”

More than 200,000 visitors are expected to attend the month-long event which kicks off in Petrie Plaza in Canberra’s CBD on Friday 28 November.

Volunteer shifts range from two hours to four hours and SIDS and Kids ACT is asking volunteers to commit to a minimum of three shifts over the opening period.

All volunteers will be provided with a SIDS and Kids ACT Christmas in the City commemorative volunteer T-shirt, a sun hat, sunscreen, water and full site induction and training.

For more information about volunteering at the Christmas Lights in the City, contact SIDS and Kids ACT on 6287 4255 or email volunteers@sidsandkidsact.org.
