THE ACT is one of the nation’s most affordable states or territories to educate a child for government and systemic education, according to the Australian Scholarships Group Planning for Education Index. school

The survey, using 6900 responses from Member parents and compiled by the not-for-profit organisation, found that for a child born in 2014, the forecast cost of a systemic education in Canberra at $208,426 is the most affordable of any capital city—$34,107 less than Brisbane ($242,533) and $27,091 cheaper than Sydney for preschool through to Year 12.

Government education in Canberra, at $54,073 is also well below the national metro average ($63,251) and $15,516 more affordable than Sydney.

However, Canberra parents considering a private education for their son or daughter showed parents are forecast to pay $422,635 per child for a private education, third only to Sydney ($543,334) and Melbourne ($504,742).

The ASG Planning for Education Index also forecast preschool or kindergarten will cost parents between $2211 and $5712 depending on the school type in 2014.

ASG CEO John Velegrinis says the cost of education in Australia has risen “by more than double” the rate of inflation over the past 10 years.
