ACT unemployment rate down: ABS

THE ACT’s unemployment rate has decreased, according to new data.Canberra

The Australian Bureau of Statistics says the ACT’s unemployment rate fell to 3.8 per cent in January from 4 per cent, despite expectations public service job cuts would hurt the Canberra workforce.

The participation rate remained steady at 71.3 per cent.

Nationally however, Australia’s unemployment rate has jumped to 6 per cent for the first time in more than a decade.

The ABS estimates that 3,700 jobs were lost in January, pushing the national unemployment rate from 5.8 up to 6 per cent for the first time since July 2003.
