“Improvention”… back at the The Street Theatre on July 19.
THAT unique festival of spontaneous theatre and comedy, “Improvention”, hits The Street Theatre on Saturday, July 19. This year’s highlights will be a fully improvised zombie musical, “Zombsical”, the grand finale of the laugh-a-minute Canberra Impro Challenge, and performances by international guests, David Razowsky, from the US, and Kiki Hohnen, from the Netherlands. “People just don’t imagine that genuine drama can be fully improvised at such a level,” says director Nick Byrne. Bookings to thestreet.org.au or 6247 1223.

CHILD Players ACT’s ninth production is a favourite – Roald Dahl’s “The Witches”, which was director BJ Anyos’s first Child Play production in 2005. The program provides 42 children, aged between 10 and 17, the chance to learn about theatre. The show’s at Belconnen Theatre (now theatre@bcs), July 10-19. More information at childplayersact.com.au and bookings to 6257 1950 or canberrarep.org.au.

MIXED news that the livewire exhibitions and promotions co-ordinator at M16 Artspace, Emily Casey, is moving to the UK. Good for her, sad for us, as her three years with M16 has been full-on. Together with the Japanese Embassy, Casey has cooked up a fabulous season of art, “Japanese Encounter”, at M16, July 10-27. The exhibition features drawings, paintings and video works by 14 Japanese artists, including video works by Japan’s 2013 Venice Biennale artist, Koki Tanaka.

THE Drill Hall Gallery has “Araya Rasdjarmearnsook: Storytellers of the Town” by leading Thai artist Rasdjarmearnsook until August. Curated by John Clark and Clare Veal, the show includes video installations and photographic images that eerily highlight the uncertainty of meanings and messages. At Drill Hall Gallery, Kingsley Street, Acton, until August 10.

ITALIAN guitarist Marco Mina’ will perform works by Niccollò Paganini and Mauro Giuliana at Wesley Music Centre, 7.30pm, on July 17. Italy’s fight for independence is said to be audible within the works of these two composers. Bookings to trybooking.com/FFAC or tickets at the door.

QUEANBEYAN City Council has artist Margaret Hadfield judging its regional art awards. With a non-acquisitive award of $2000, a highly commended of $500 and a people’s choice of $500, it’s bound to be popular. Entries by July 30 for an August 5 opening. Entry forms at qcc.nsw.gov.au
