Salut! Baroque… cheeky title for new show.
“MAD Songs and Englishmen” is a cheeky title for Salut! Baroque’s next concert. It’s got nothing to do with Noel Coward, but is rather a look at radical changes in English music between Oliver Cromwell’s Commonwealth and the restoration of King Charles. At Albert Hall, 7.30pm, on Friday, August 8. Tickets at the door or by subscription to baroque.com.au

THAT indefatigable former Canberra director and Olivier award-winner Adam Spreadbury-Maher tells us he’s unearthed another hitherto unperformed play. Now he’s producing the late, brilliant Joe Orton’s lost first play, “Fred and Madge”, at the King’s Head Theatre in London. Readers will recall this follows his unearthing of Terence Rattigan’s forgotten stage version of “A Tale of Two Cities”.

RETURNING to Canberra for its sixth year, “Short+Sweet Canberra” presents more than 30 10-minute plays, directed and performed by Canberrans. Twenty of the plays were also written here, including a mini-musical by Jim McGrath. At the Courtyard Studio from August 5 with finals on August 17. Bookings to canberratheatrecentre.com.au or 6275 2700.

POPULAR pianist and former ANU School of Music lecturer, Colleen Rae-Gerrard, will join bassoonist and 2014 Wesley Music Scholar, Matthew Ventura, to perform works by Mozart, Telemann, Schubert and Weber at Wesley Music Centre, 3pm, on Sunday, August 3. Bookings to trybooking.com or tickets at the door.

THE next free concert at the High Court is by the Canberra Recorder and Early Music Society, 1pm, on Sunday August 3 No bookings, but be  early – 500 people came to the last one.

EXPRESSIONS of interest are sought for four vacancies on the ACT Heritage Council from people with experience in Aboriginal culture, Aboriginal history, architecture, landscape architecture, town planning and urban design and for positions representing the community and the Aboriginal community. Applications (to environment.act.gov.au/heritage) close on August 15.
