‘All-Australian’ comedy for Tempo

THERE’S a lot of excitement around Tempo Theatre, one of Canberra’s great stayers, as it celebrates 40 years of entertaining Canberrans.

Tempo launched at The Playhouse back in 1974 with a production of “Bye Bye Birdie,” which by sheer chance I reviewed for ABC radio. Coming up next week as part of its anniversary program is a production of Nick Enright’s urban comedy, “Daylight Saving.”

The play is set in in Pittwater on Sydney’s northern beaches. Restaurant owner Felicity’s (Flick) husband, Tom, is a manager of a tennis superstar. Out of the blue, Flick’s old high school flame from her exchange student year in the U.S turns up to complicate the plot, with a bit of help from Flick’s mother and the neurotic next door neighbour.

It serves as an illustration of what can happen on “that magic night when the clocks go back and we all get an extra hour to dream on.”

After a four year absence from the directing scene, Michael Weston is back in the saddle for this show. He saw it years ago in its first season at the Ensemble Theatre in North Sydney and says he has loved the script ever since. “Enright is one of Australia’s best contemporary authors who manages to hit the chord of the Aussie sense of humour,” Weston told us.

Billed as an all-Australian show, it’s suitable for all the family. Diabetes ACT is holding a charity preview night on Thursday, May 15.

“Daylight Saving.” By Nick Enright, at Belconnen Theatre (Theatre@BCS) – Swanson Court, Belconnen, 7.30pm May16,17,21,22,23 and 24, 2pm May 17 and 24  and 4pm on May 18. Bookings to canberraticketing.com.au or 6275 2700.
