Bipartisan support for bigger Assembly

THE ACT Legislative Assembly appears set to grow in size after the Canberra Liberals membership voted last night in favour of increasing the number of MLAs from 17 to 25.

Soon after the party made its decision at a policy convention last night, opposition leader Jeremy Hanson announced he would work with Chief Minister Katy Gallagher to bring about the expansion of the Assembly, and that the Liberals would support legislation to that effect.

To pass, the legislation would require two thirds of sitting MLAs to vote in favour of it.

“An expansion will enhance representation and acknowledges an increase in the ACT population since self government,”Mr Hanson said. “It will also resolve issues relating to the size of the ministry.”
