Bird watching walks at the Arboretum

arboretum

A series of free bird watching walks are starting at the Arboretum this Sunday from 7.30 am to 10.30 am. The walks are being organised by the Friends of the Arboretum.

National Arboretum Canberra Executive Manager Stephen Alegria said the walks are run by experienced ornithologist and Friend of the Arboretum, Tony Lawson.

“The Arboretum is home to a range of interesting local birdlife, including a variety of species of parrot, such as the yellow-tailed black cockatoo and the eastern rosella, as well as honeyeater species such as the yellow-faced honey eater,” Stephen said.

“With spring upon us, the birds at the Arboretum should be quite active looking for food and tending to their nests. At the moment the Arboretum has a family of masked lapwings (Vanellus miles) with some freshly hatched chicks, so if you are lucky you might see them.

“I encourage those who attend to bring a pair of binoculars on the walk so they can get a closer look at what the Arboretum has to offer. Walkers should also wear sturdy shoes and long trousers and take water.”

The walks will be held from 7.30 am to 10 am on Sunday 19, Thursday 23, Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 October 2014. Those who attend are asked to meet at the Village Centre car park.

Places are limited for these free walks. For more information, or to book, call 6207 8484 or email arboretum@act.gov.au
