Bitcoin comes to the Canberra Centre

image001

Bitcoin is a high point of what is becoming known as JerkTech.

And now you can buy and sell it from a kiosk in the Canberra Centre, lined up with the other ATMs.

If you haven’t yet cottoned on to why the digital currency is an awful idea have a look around at the roads and street lights and try and imagine life without them, or the hospital, or the police.

Unless you’re a backwoods crazy with a large supply of guns and tinned baked beans Bitcoin miserably fails Kant’s Categorical Imperative, which is to say no matter what your faith we can prove it is bad.

Author Charles Stross has a detailed explanation of why it is awful on so very many levels.

While I’m sure ‘satan’ is fairly happy with the despicable carbon footprint that (coin) mining leaves, this article (and the one you linked) miss out a lot of the story and really only address the ‘bad’ side of cryptocurrency. Would be nice to see a discussion of various aspects next time rather than ‘omg satancoin’.

On a side note, however long cryptocurrency is around, the exiting and scary part is actually non-monetary uses of the blockchain (see http://www.wired.com/2014/03/decentralized-applications-built-bitcoin-great-except-whos-responsible-outcomes/).

John, when you are in Melbourne next I invite you to visit the Bitcoin Embassy that opened on 24th Nov 2014. You will note the diverse people all discussing the legitimate uses of Bitcoin. http://www.bitcoinembassy.io The only thing ‘awful’ and ‘bad’ as you mentioned in your article is how weak and biased your article is…. which I hope you have the courage to update once you are more informed.
