THE ever-resourceful programming manager Stephen Pike, of the Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre, has the Streeton Trio at The Q this weekend for a one-off concert.

Now based in Berlin, the trio (formed in 2008 in Geneva) is made up of Benjamin Kopp on piano, Emma Jardine on violin and Martin Smith on cello, who have studied intensively with leading chamber musicians like Gabor Takacs-Nágy, Hatto Beyerle, Ferenc Rados, Avedis Kouyoumdjian, Johannes Meissl, Erich Hörbath, Gary Hoffman, Philippe Graffin, Pascal Devoyon, Mihaela Martin.

Named after the Aussie painter, Sir Arthur Streeton, the trio has performed in Wigmore Hall, Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre, Melbourne Recital Centre and the Pablo Casals Festival, also winning the 2011 Music Viva Chamber Music Competition.

The Streeton Trio is also the first Australian ensemble to be selected for the European Chamber Music Academy, where it has been ensemble-in-residence since 2010.

The performance at The Q will comprise a number of works featuring a mythical concept or other-worldly character; from Haydn’s bubbly rustic “Gypsy trio”, to Rachmaninov’s expressive “Elegiaque Trio No. 1”, “ Butterflying” by Elena Kats-Chernin and the “Ghost” trio by Beethoven.

“The Gypsy, The Ghost and Other Tales,” by the Streeton Trio, at The Q – Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre, 7:30pm, Saturday July 26. Bookings to 6285 6290 or theq.net.au
