DONORS in the ACT have given more than $1.2 million to Save the Children so far this financial year, making them by far the most generous state or territory in Australia when taking population into consideration.

The $1,277,000 donated by Territorians so far is almost triple that given by both Victoria and New South Wales, and nearly double second placed Northern Territory based on per person donations made to Save the Children in Australia since July 1, 2013.

“This is a tremendous effort by the people of the ACT, who have supported dozens of Save the Children programs across Australia including vital early learn programs, initiatives to help young people going through the juvenile justice system and assistance for newly arrived migrant and refugee mothers and their children,” said Mat Tinkler, Save the Children Director of Policy and Public Affairs.

“But it’s not just our work in Australia that people are helping. ACT donors have been making a tremendous difference overseas, supporting our work responding to the Syrian refugee crisis, conflicts in Iraq and South Sudan, and our ongoing relief work with those affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines last November.

“With just days left until the end of the financial year, we’re urging Territorians to keep donating to Save the Children to help save and protect vulnerable children while also helping ensure we retain the mantle of Australia’s most generous state or territory.”

This June Save the Children is specifically urging Australians to give to its One Day campaign, aiming to raise $600,000 by the end of the month, which could help train 600 midwives. Around the world each year one million newborn babies do not survive their first day of life.

“Forty million mothers give birth each year without the help from a qualified health worker like a midwife, and we’re aiming to help change that with the help of our generous donors in the ACT,” Mr Tinkler said.

To donate to Save the Children’s One Day campaign go to www.oneday.org.au or call 1800 76 00 11.
