Water usage hits record levels as temperatures soar

CANBERRANS have recorded the highest water consumption figures in seven years, using more than 250 megalitres yesterday, according to ACTEW Water figures.water1

The last time the community reached these consumption levels was spring 2006.

ACTEW says the rise in demand on the water network means customers in various locations across Canberra are currently experiencing discoloured water, caused by the surge of water in the system, disturbing the natural sediments within the network.

Customers were advised to be mindful of their water use during this period and that Permanent Water Conservation Measures currently apply.

A guide to Permanent Water Conservation Measures:

 Lawns and plants can be watered using a hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle, a bucket or a watering can at any time.

 Sprinklers and other irrigation systems may be used to water lawns and plants before 9am in the morning or after 6pm at night on any day.

 At all times lawns and plants may only be watered without causing pooling or runoff.
