Chaplinitis and other arts this weekend

THE National Film and Sound Archive of Australia’s Arc cinema program will stage a special tribute to the greatest of all movie stars, Charlie Chaplin this Saturday August 30.

2014 marks the 100th anniversary of Chaplin’s first appearance as his iconic character The Tramp. To celebrate this milestone Arc presents “Chaplinitis,” a day of Chaplin-related fun for kids and adults alike. Enjoy live music accompaniment, documentaries, and a discussion panel with international experts, and a selection of his early classics and rarities – all beautifully restored. Throughout the day: Chaplin documentaries (free); 1:30pm Family screening, 5pm Panel: Chaplin’s legacy (free); 7:30pm: Main screening. Bookings to 6248 2000.


IMOGEN Cooper has established a reputation as one of the finest interpreters of the classical repertoire. She’ll be in Llewellyn hall at 7pm tonight, Thursday August 28, for Musica Viva, focusing on the musical and emotional kinship between Clara and Robert Schumann and their friend and protégé Johannes Brahms, tickets at the door.

ARTIST Tony Giles has his third solo exhibition, “More Girls,” at Paintbox Fine Art, 32 Lonsdale St, Braddon from August 30 to September 14, 11am-5pm Wednesday-Sunday. “Each painting is a journey of discovery and his whimsical characters are born as he works, evolving with every layer of paint. The multiple layers give the paintings depth and lustre moving from dark to light to create a vibrancy on textured canvases,” he says.


MORE than 1,400 students from 60 public schools will showcase their performing arts repertoire at the Step into the Limelight Gala performance from 7-10pm at AIS Arena in Bruce tonight, Thursday August 28, tickets at the gate.

“OVER there” sees Sound Archivist Thorsten Kaeding exploring the music and careers of some of Australia’s most prominent musicians and recording stars during World War One in a FREE presentation at the National Film and Sound Archive’s Theatrette. Today, Thursday, August 28, 5:30-6:30pm.


ON the same theme, The Llewellyn Choir’s next concert presents music from composers who were associated with the First World War. The concert features “Morning Heroes,” a choral symphony by Arthur Bliss, Herbert Howells’ “Requiem,” Vaughan Williams’s “Benedicite” and songs by Gustav Holst and Ernest Farrar. THE ANU Film Group will be celebrating the life and legacy of the late Robin Williams with a special tribute screening of two of his most beloved ?lms – “Dead Poets Society” and “Good Morning, Vietnam” in the HC Coombs Theatre, ANU, this Sunday, August 31 at 6 pm.

PHOTOACCESS in the Manuka Arts Centre has two news exhibitions opening tonight, Thursday 28 August 38 – Annette Lock’s “There is no escape,” made in their darkroom from images taken at Kingston Bus Depot and the 44 participant strong members’ show, “Access 2 – One Great Place,” the sister show to the earlier “One Great Face.”


UNTIL September 21, Belconnen Arts Centre is proudly hosting the bi-annual exhibition of Strathnairn members in “Strathnairn by the Lake”, selected and curated by Peter Haynes, Honorary Curator at Strathnairn Arts. This show highlights the diversity and quality of practice among Strathnairn members, from professional to skilled amateurs.

MEANTIME in the Foyer at Belconnen Arts Centre, 118 Emu Bank, Belconnen until Sept 14, Jemima Parker’s “Transitions” extends her explorations of the blurred boundaries between art and fashion. Using drawing, screen-printing and textile processes Jemima presents a series of hand-printed sculptural textile objects that can be installed in the gallery space or worn on the body, together with a suite of works on paper. 10am – 4pm Tuesday – Sunday.


AND Belconnen Arts Centre, also has “Dance Kaleidoscope” this August 31 at 3pm. It’s a dance celebration by dance providers at the Arts Centre, in the Belconnen region and ACT independent dancers, African, Hilal, Tango, Contemporary, Swing, Colonial Bush Dance and more.


THE Q Exhibition Space a composite of two exhibitions by Edwin Gardiner until September 6, 10am – 4pm Monday to Friday 10am – 3pm Saturday, closed Sundays. Gardiner’s work includes the ‘Price of Oil’ painting series exhibited in Melbourne 2012, and the more recent paintings series of paintings called ‘Presence and Absence’.


CANBERRA Dance Development Centre is showcasing their always-brilliant young dancers in “Star Light Star Bright,” at the Canberra Theatre at 7.30pm this Saturday August 30. Tickets at the door.


IT’S a busy weekend at Wesley. On Saturday August 30 at 5pm in Wesley Church, The Oriana Chorale will perform “The Golden Age”, masterpieces of choral music from the Old and New Worlds, featuring motets from Monteverdi, Schutz and Lassus, a lively Mexican Mass (Juan de Padilla) and J.S.Bach’s Lobet den Herrn. THEN at Wesley Music Centre this Saturday, August 30 at 7.30pm, Guitar Trek will perform works by Tchaikovsky, Houghton, Westlake, Turina and Montes. Tickets at the door. Children under 12 free.

RETURNING for her 10th annual concert at Wesley Uniting Church this Sunday, August 31, at Wesley, Sarah Kim, the Australian organist who performs at Notre-Dame-des-Vertus and St. George’s Anglican Church in Paris, will play a program of masterworks for grand organ Forrest at 3pm. Tickets at the door.


MEGALO has new work by Deborah Metz involving stone lithography, mokuhanga and frottage. Some of the work springs from inspiration last year when, as an Artist in Residence at Lake Kawaguchiko at the foot of Mt.Fuji Metz felt herself “submerged in a totally different place compared to Australia.” From August 30 – September 20 at Megalo, 21 Wentworth Ave Kingston, Tuesday – Saturday 9.30am – 5pm.
