Chinese solar plant approved for Mugga Lane

SIMON Corbell says planning approval for a 13 megawatt Solar Park at Mugga Lane is evidence the ACT is leading the nation in the transition from fossil fuel energy sources to cleaner renewables like solar and wind.

“The planning and land authority has approved, subject to conditions, Chinese company Zhenfa’s proposal for a 13 megawatt solar farm on the corner of Mugga Lane and the Monaro Hwy, adjacent to the Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre,” Simon said.

The project, which will be connected to the Gilmore substation through an underground connection, includes half a megawatt of innovative tracking panels which will increase electricity output by following the sun over the course of the day.

“The Mugga Lane solar farm and the newly opened Royalla solar farm are set to deliver large scale renewable energy at an affordable price,” Mr Corbell said.

Both companies were granted guaranteed feed in tariffs through the ACT Solar Auction for a 20 year period.

“The cost to Canberrans of achieving 90% renewable energy is expected to peak at about $4 per household per week in 2020 before declining. This will be offset by savings of about $4 per household per week from energy efficiency programs put in place by the government.

“The delivery of this nation leading project is a big step for the ACT towards our greenhouse gas reduction targets of 40% by 2020, and becoming a carbon neutral city by 2060.
