“Strong Women: Circus Sisters,” directed by Marcus Freeman, documents the rehearsal journey of the Women with Disabilities ACT’s Strong Women, Circus Sisters Troupe, as they learn a range of circus skills over a period of six months, culminating in a public performance.

In December last year at Tuggeranong Arts Centre, an exhibition of photographs by Aart Groothuis also documented the process.

ACT Minister for Disability Joy Burch in launching the film premiere last night as part of National Youth Week 2014 congratulated the members of the troupe “for showing their strength, skill and confidence to the Canberra community.” She also commended  Freeman “for leading a project that celebrates and supports the contributions of women, particularly young women, with disabilities.”

Ms Burch told those present that the ACT Government had supported the Circus Sisters Troupe’s rehearsals and performance through a $5,000 grant from the Office for Women.

The project was also supported by the Woden School and Anglicare’s ‘Shaw Possibilities’ program and production was supported by Hands Across Canberra and The Snow Foundation.
