Civic starts gearing up for Skate In The City

THE old Bible House in Garema Place is getting a makeover from its Multicultural Festival skin for something more suited to the winter bonanza that is Skate In The City.

Ticket sales commenced today for the fourth annual Skate in the City event in Garema Place.

Construction will commence in the heart of Canberra’s CBD in the coming fortnight as Canberra’s only open air ice rink opens its doors at 7pm on Friday June 20.

Canberra’s love of an outdoor lifestyle will once again be emphasised by the month long event, with a giant snow globe set to feature in 2014.

“This year we are running some new competitions to increase interaction with all our guests,” Jane Easthope, CEO of Canberra CBD Limited, said. “We will be running a photo sharing competition in our giant snow globe throughout the event with four major prize packs to be won.”

‘Frozen Friday’s’ will create a dance party atmosphere heading into the weekend, while Saturday nights will have special themes to dress up to, including Daggy Jumpers, Super Heroes, Funny Hats and Onesies.

“It is the perfect event for kids during the July school holidays,” Easthope continued. “Food and drink is available at the surrounding restaurants and cafes, with some outlets offering special discounts for those who have skated on the rink.”

Cultural Sundays will return in 2014 celebrating a different country each week. Cultural Sundays are a great way to experience the food and culture of other countries with fun for all ages including, craft, travel, food, traditional dress, and a culturally themed skate show.

There will also be daily professional Ice Shows throughout July starting on Saturday 5 July. See the website for further details on ice events.

The local fiano that punches above its weight

"The Collector fiano was perfect to drink on a hot day: crisp, textural and with an element of preserved lemon. It is not a low-alcohol wine with a nudge above 13 per cent alcohol by volume," writes wine columnist RICHARD CALVER.
