Clingan honoured for ‘sharing music and the joy it brings’

CANBERRA musician Judith Clingan has been honoured for her “So Good a Thing” festival with the Award for Excellence by an Individual at the Art Music Awards, run by APRA AMCOS and the Australian Music Centre and staged this evening at the Plaza Hotel in Melbourne.

A composer, conductor, performer and music educator, Clingan was named the very first Canberra Artist of the Year in 1991 and is justly celebrated for her founding of music organisations like Gaudeamus, the Canberra Youth Choir, the Young Music Society, Voicebox Youth Opera and Wayfarers Australia, which encourages teenagers, particularly boys, nationally, to enjoy singing choral music.

In Canberra she is acknowledged as having introduction generations of children to the pleasures of performer music, and as a mighty opponent of the notion that some children just don’t have musical ability.

“So Good a Thing” took place in December last year at Albert Hall, to mark Clingan’s 50 years of music-making in Canberra.

The Award for Excellence by an Individual was presented as a testament to her “continued dedication to teaching, composing, performing and sharing music and the joy it brings.”

The Art Music Awards, held in Melbourne for the first time, celebrate the achievement and creative success of composers, performers and educators in the genres of contemporary art music, jazz and experimental music.
