Coffee machine sets Yarralumla house ablaze

FIREFIGHTERS have extinguished a fire at a Gunn Street home in Yarralumla.

It is believed the fire began in a coffee machine and the house has sustained extensive smoke damage throughout.

Three ACT Fire &Resuce; crews are now checking to see if the fire has spread to the roof of the two storey property.

The Hazardous Materials Unit, Breathing Apparatus Van and two commanders are also on scene.

Firefighters have detected a small fire in the roof space and are working to extinguish it.

The coffee machine had been fitted within a specially designed unit within the wall which caused the fire to spread.

Crews have begun ventilation operations and will conduct extensive atmospheric tests.

No one home at the time of the fire, and a neighbour reported to Emergency Triple Zero (000).

Crews will remain on scene for some time yet.

Upon further investigation, firefighters have confirmed there was no fire in the roof space but the area was heavily smoke logged.

Fire damage within the house has been contained to the kitchen. An early damage bill is estimated at $15,000.
